Hummus on boadway

Hummus supposedly originated 7,000 years ago in the Middle East and it has since then made its way to 2Alices in Newburgh where it can be spread on a bagel of your choice. The café's special, called the "semi healthy," combines hummus with tomatoes, cucumbers and sprouts. A paste of chickpeas, olive oil and tahini or sesame paste, hummus is no longer buried in the world of vegetarianism. Traditionally prepared hummus provides vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B6, folate, and is rich in potassium, phosphorus, iron, zinc and calcium. It’s packed with protein and fiber, too. According to USDA standards, traditionally prepared hummus is rich in essential minerals such as potassium, phosphorous, magnesium, calcium, iron and zinc. It also provides vitamins such as vitamin A, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin B3, vitamin B6 and folate. Hummus is a good source of protein and fiber.

2 Alices Coffee Lounge has two locations: Cornwall on Hudson and the other in Newburgh. The Newburgh café features regular events like Minecraft Sundays, holiday popup shops, and trivia nights. Visitors can grab the open mic when the café stays open during the popular Newburgh Last Saturdays, a monthly celebration of arts and restaurants in the city’s Washington’s Headquarters neighborhood. The cafe’s recent ongoing art exhibit featured pieces by local Orange County students for a project to generate discussion about online respect.

Besides lots of natural light and the effervescent barista Melzina, 2Alices serves up spectacular coffee, tea, and hot chocolate, as well as soup, oatmeal, quiche, salad, and bagel specials. Stop by and see what you can put on a bagel: cream cheese, tofu, salsa, sprouts, egg…. and/or hummus.

Safety on the net

According to a 2011 nationwide survey by the CDC, 23% of females and 14% of males who ever experienced rape, physical violence, or stalking by an intimate partner, first experienced some form of partner violence between 11 and 17 years of age. What makes this statistic especially sobering is the fact that many teens lack the communication skills to deal with the new and uncomfortable emotions these situations bring up. Skills to stand up to a perpetrator, and also the courage to ask for help.

February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. Generating conversation about how teen internet use affects healthy relationships is the goal of Safe Love is…Cyber Respect at 2 Alices Coffee Lounge in Newburgh. This teen art show, organized by domestic violence services advocate Safe Homes of Orange County, is the second of its kind for the agency. The 2016 theme was cyber respect: topics include internet bullying, online stalking, and other issues teens face every day when they plug in. Submissions came from middle and high school students across Orange County.

The message of awareness, from teens and directed to teens, is powerful and effective. We all know the internet makes communication efficient. Anonymity makes bullying that much easier, but focusing art on this specific problem gives teens the courage to fight back.
